BEREA (923TheFan) – Like the rest of the NFL, the Browns paired down their roster to the mandated 53-man limit by 6 p.m. Saturday.
The team waived 25 players, placed running back Brandon Jackson on on injured reserve and released receiver Demetrius Williams.
General manager Tom Heckert and the Browns are expected to be extremely active on the waiver wire over the next 24-48 hours to help bolster the roster.
“We’re combing the wire and we have been,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “We’ve foreshadowed this by looking at rosters and seeing where guys fit. We have a list of guys that we would highlight to bring in even though maybe their fate hasn’t been finally sealed wherever they’re at.”
Defensive back Coye Francies, drafted in the 6th round in 2009, defensive lineman Travis Ivey, defensive backs Ramzee Robinson and DeAngelo Smith and offensive lineman Phil Trautwein were waived prior to Saturday mornings practice.
Later in the evening the team announced a second round of moves.
Undrafted rookie free agent Armond Smith appears to have won the third string running back position after Quinn Porter was waived. Tyler Clutts was also cut leaving rookie Owen Marecic as the team’s lone fullback.
Quarterback Jarrett Brown was waived, however the Browns hope he will clear waivers and that he will be placed on the practice squad.
Branndon Braxton, Andre Carroll, L.J. Castile, Calton Ford, Evan Frosch, Carl Gettis, Eric Gordon, Chris Matthews, Steve Octavien, Ko Quaye, Sidney Tarver, Dominic Alford, Archie Donald, Brian Sanford, Jarrod Shaw, Brian Smith and Rod Windsor complete the list of waived players.
