CHICAGO (AP) — Bears coach Lovie Smith says quarterback Jay Cutler has suffered a broken thumb on his right throwing hand.
In an interview with WBBM-AM in Chicago on Monday, Smith confirmed reports that Cutler was injured during Chicago’s 31-20 victory over San Diego on Sunday night. He says it happened when Cutler helped tackle Antoine Cason on an interception return in the fourth quarter.
Smith says Cutler was seeing specialists on Monday and would not offer a timetable for his recovery. The Chicago Tribune reported he is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
Smith also says he was unaware of the injury until after the game.
Cutler stayed in and finished with 286 yards passing. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while leading the Bears to their fifth straight win.
