INDEPENDENCE (92.3 The Fan) – The Cleveland Cavaliers called up guard Manny Harris from the NBADL Tuesday.
Harris was signed to a 10-day contract and will be available for a total of four games with the All Star break consuming five of those days.
In his last two games Harris scored 46 and 36 points – both against Rio Grande – for the Charge.
“I felt like towards the end that I was doing enough (to get noticed,” Harris said. “We were winning. I was scoring, rebounding and getting assists. Towards the beginning we weren’t winning that much so I was getting frustrated because I wanted to win. I’m a winner.
“I felt towards the end I did the most that I can do.”
Coach Byron Scott said that he would like to see if Harris has improved in the areas that he had discussed with him at the end of last season.
“The biggest thing – number one is the maturity level, to see if he’s matured as a basketball player,” Scott said. “Number two, to see if he’s worked on the things that we talked about after the season last year and a lot of that was the mid-range game.
“I want to see if he’s improved on his ball handling and his mid-range game.”
In 17 games (12 starts) with Canton this season, Harris is averaging 21.4 points on .470 shooting with 7.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals in 32.9 minutes per game.
The Cavaliers remain shorthanded with guards. Daniel Gibson, who is expected to be active but if he plays against Detroit will be a game-time decision, and Anthony Parker are still on the mend.
“He had been playing really well down in the D-league so we thought it would be a good idea to bring him back up for these next two games and then we’ll have him for two games after the all star break,” Scott said. “We’ll see how it goes. We know Manny and he knows us so that’s a good thing.”
Harris, who sat out training camp due to freezer burn on his left foot, currently ranks third in the D-League in scoring.
He suffered the freezer burn during the NBA lockout in November after wearing wet socks into a cryogenic chamber. The Cavaliers kept Mychel Thompson on the roster ahead of Harris, who did not have a guaranteed contract.
The New York Knicks briefly expressed interest in Harris – that was before Jeremy Lin went off for them.
“There were three or four teams that came to games and that my agent talked to,” Harris said. “It wasn’t as serious so to speak. That’s one of the teams that came to several of the last games before Jeremy Lin exploded but I don’t know if I had a chance or not.”
When asked about Lin’s success in New York, Harris was all smiles.
“I’m not a hater,” Harris said. “It was nice seeing him go out and do that. I actually worked out with him last summer in Vegas. He’s a good player.”
The 6-foot-5 guard spent the 2010-11 season with the Cavaliers, playing in 54 games (15 starts) and averaging 5.9 points on .374 shooting, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 17.2 minutes per game.
