CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – Indians DH Travis Hafner will begin a minor league rehab assignment with the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday.
Hafner is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee, which took place on May 31st. He has not played a game with the Indians since May 23rd.
Before injuring his knee, Hafner was hitting .242 with six homeruns, six doubles and an on-base percentage of .380.
Barring any setbacks, Hafner may be able to rejoin the Indians at some point during the next homestand, which begins on July 2nd. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and utility infielder/DH Jose Lopez are the most likely candidates to be optioned to Columbus upon Hafner’s return.
Hafner will be in the lineup as DH for the Clippers on Wednesday night, when they host the Norfolk Tides. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Huntington Park.
