BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford says a fan yelled a racial slur at him at his rehab assignment at the stadium of the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Crawford says he hasn’t heard such things in Boston.
Crawford has had a chilly reception since signing a seven-year, $142 million deal with the Red Sox. In his first season in Boston, he hit .255 with 11 homers, 56 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
He has yet to play in the big leagues this season because of a sprained ligament in his throwing elbow.
Crawford says he understands why fans who love their team are disappointed in his production. But he singled out the one in New Hampshire. Crawford says: “He was the only one I had a problem with.”
Video of Crawford’s postgame comments were posted on WEEI.com.
