NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have obtained third baseman Casey McGehee from Pittsburgh for reliever Chad Qualls, a move that follows injuries to Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira.
McGehee, 29, is hitting .230 with eight homers and 35 RBIs.
The 33-year-old Qualls was acquired by the Yankees from Philadelphia on July 1 and made eight appearances.
Rodriguez is on the disabled list after breaking a bone in hand when hit by a pitch last week. Teixeira received a cortisone shot Tuesday for a hand injury after leaving Monday night’s game against Baltimore.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Joba Chamberlain, sidelined since June 2011, could be activated to fill Qualls’ roster spot.
