ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — A southeastern Ohio woman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing her 4-year-old stepdaughter last year.

Athens County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Ward on Wednesday sentenced 26-year-old Ashley Young to life in prison without possibility of parole for 20 years. Young pleaded guilty last week after previously pleading innocent by reason of insanity.

Investigators in Athens County said she choked Kaylen Young and slammed her head into the floor of their home in May 2011. A prosecutor said Young also tried to buy illegal drugs on her way to the hospital after the child had been transported for treatment.

Young declined to speak in court but broke down in tears when Ashley’s grandmother read a victim-impact statement.
