CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – One pitcher the Indians had some interest in at the trade deadline is staying put, as the Tampa Bay Rays picked up the option on pitcher James Shields today.
The team exercised the 2013 contract option, worth $10.25 million.
Last season the 30-year-old went 15-10 with a 3.52 ERA and pitched more than 200 innings.
The Rays could look to move him this offseason, and with the pitching woes the Indians had in 2012, he would be a great fit if they could work out a deal with Tampa.
Tampa still has sitting out there three options – pitcher Fernando Rodney at $2.5 million, Luke Scott at $6 million and Jose Molina at $1.8 million.
