CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – Cross quarterback Alex Smith off the wish list for Cleveland Browns fans.
Fox Sports’ and NFL network contributor Jay Glazer reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to acquire Smith from the San Francisco 49ers for a 2013 2nd round pick (No. 34 overall) and a selection in 2014.
The trade can not be consummated or announced until the new league year begins March 12 at 4 p.m.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday night that a deal for Smith, who lost his starting job this past season to Colin Kaepernick, was “essentially done.”
Smith, who was entering the final year of his contract, will receive a new long term deal as well.
The Browns were rumored to have interest in acquiring Smith as recently as Tuesday.
Kansas City also has the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft while the 49ers, who already have 14 selections in April, are expected to pick up at least 1 more additional pick this year.
Browns CEO Joe Banner said over the weekend that their goal is to position themselves like the 49ers have – be a contender with an abundance of draft picks that they can use or parlay into future picks.
