CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan)PESTANO’S ELBOW: Friday night Terry Francona made a rather odd decision by going to Cody Allen over Joe Smith in the 7th inning.

The move backfired when the Twins’ Chris Parmelee homered, and after the game Francona said Smith would have pitched the 11th inning of the extra inning game.

Saturday, the manager cleared up as to why exactly he skipped over Smith in the 7th, and that’s due to the fact he didn’t have usual 8th inning man Vinnie Pestano available.

“Vinnie’s elbow is a little cranky, we were trying to stay away away from him, that’s why it was a little different than normal,” Francona said.

The manager said that Pestano would not be available for today’s game, but that he did throw a bullpen early on Saturday and “he threw pretty well.”

SWISHER RETURNS: The Indians have back Nick Swisher in the lineup for Saturday’s afternoon game, and Francona said that he was simply playing it safe with the teams usual 1B/RF.

“When an everyday guy takes a couple of days off to get something better, you want him to get better,” Francona said.

Swisher was having some soreness in his left shoulder, and was given a few days off (two Phillies game and last night’s 10-inning win).

The 32-year-old is hitting .265 with two homers and 9 RBI for the Indians in 23 games this year.

MYERS FEELING BETTER: Indians starting pitcher Brett Myers continues to make progress from his right elbow inflammation, and Friday threw from 60 feet, and threw again Saturday.

“You can tell he’s throwing free and easy and that’s nice to see,” Francona said. “”He’s already itching to get back on the mound, he still needs a couple of weeks to get throwing.”

Myers is 0-3 with a 8.02 ERA this season for the Indians. His spot in the rotation has been taken by Corey Kluber who is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA.

HERE COME THE A’S: The Indians have a four-game home series starting on Monday with Oakland, and here’s the pitching matchups set for the series.

Monday, May 6 vs. Oakland 7:05pm – RHP Ubaldo Jimenez vs. RHP Jarrod Parker. Tuesday, May 7 vs. Oakland 7:05PM
RHP Zach McAllister vs. LHP Tommy Milone.

Wednesday, May 8 vs. Oakland 7:05pm RHP Justin Masterson vs. RHP AJ Griffin. Thursday, May 9 vs. Oakland 12:05pm LHP Scott Kazmir vs. RHP Bartolo Colon.

LINDOR ON FIRE: Indians top minor league prospect Francisco Lindor continued his hot hitting going 4-for-6 in the Carolina Mudcats 4-3 loss vs. Frederick in 11 innings with a triple, an RBI and a run scored on Friday.

It was the third time in four games that Lindor produced a multi-hit game with 10 hits during that span. Lindor ranks 1st in the Carolina League in hits (38), T1st in triples (4), 2nd in batting (.365), 3rd in OBP (.431) and total bases (56) and 4th in slugging (.538).

The 2011 first-round pick has hit safely in 20 of the first 27 games he’s played in this season.
