CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo says its last polar bear has been euthanized because of a declining health.

The zoo’s general curator Andi Kornak in a statement on Tuesday said the “humane choice” was made after assessing the female bear’s quality of life.

Zoo veterinarians earlier this year found that Aurora, the 30-year-old bear, had an untreatable case of liver cancer. Her condition had worsened during the last two days.

Aurora was born at the Cleveland zoo and was later housed at facilities in Germany and Wisconsin before returning to Cleveland in 2001. Zoo officials say the life expectancy of female polar bears living in zoos is 24 years.

Kornak says Aurora was a favorite of guests and staff.
