CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – The legend of how Johnny Manziel landed in Cleveland with the Browns last Thursday night added another chapter Thursday.

A simple text from Manziel while he sat in the green room to Browns quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains during the NFL Draft set the wheels in motion and gave the Browns all the incentive they needed to make the move.

“We’re sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on TV and we’re going back and forth, Johnny and I are texting,” Loggains told Bo Mattingly, host of ‘SportsTalk With Bo Mattingly’ which airs weekdays on 5 Arkansas radio stations. “He shoots me a text that says, ‘I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there and wreck this league together.’”

Loggains quickly forwarded the text to owner Jimmy Haslam, general manager Ray farmer and head coach Mike Pettine.

“As soon as that happened Mr. Haslam said alright, pull the trigger. We’re trading to go get this guy,” Loggains said.

Also in the interview with Mattingly, Loggains said that the Browns backed out of potential trades with Tennessee at No. 11 and Dallas at No. 16 and once they made the decision to go after Manziel, the Browns knew they had to get in front of Kansas City, who had the 23rd overall pick, to do it.

“I knew definitely that Johnny was someone that was very high on our board and someone that was in our discussions the weeks leading up to the draft,” Loggains said. “I knew there was a good chance if he was there at some point we were going to take him or even move up to go get him.”

Loggains also talked about how Manziel was on the team’s radar long before the draft, the process leading up to it and just how busy he was traveling the country to complete the evaluations for the organization.

“When I decided to take this job in Cleveland, I knew that our owner liked Johnny a lot,” Loggains said. “I think I worked out 14 quarterbacks, went to their schools, their high schools and worked them out, ate dinner with them, brought them to Cleveland.

“Once we finished all of our evaluations, it was Johnny’s name at the top of the list and there was everyone else, so I knew we needed a quarterback and we were very high on Johnny.”

Who would’ve thought that a text containing 24 words from Manziel, as he slid down the board in the first round, would be the final straw that convinced the Browns he was their guy.
