Barkevious Mingo Out To Prove Browns Should’ve Picked Up 5th Year Option

BEREA (92.3 The Fan) – Fair or not, Barkevious Mingo has yet to live up to the expectations of being a top-10 draft pick.

It’s part of the reason the Browns elected in the spring not to exercise the fifth year option on his contract.

“It was their right and now it’s my job to go out there and show them they should have,” Mingo said Tuesday.

Despite sustaining a bruised lung in the preseason as a rookie and a shoulder injury in week 1 of the 2014 campaign, Mingo has only missed 2 regular season games since being selected sixth overall in 2013. But he’s not been able to develop into a consistent starter.

He started 11 games in 2014 but just 5 games in 2013 and last season combined. He has 7 sacks – none came in 2015 – while recording a total of 16 pass breakups, 1 interception and a fumble recovery in 3 seasons.

Sacking Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on his first NFL snap remains the highlight of his young career. Mingo was thought to be a fierce pass rusher and play making defender but it hasn’t materialized consistently in the NFL.

Three head coaches haven’t helped Mingo’s development but he’s hopeful that the return of Ray Horton, who coached him as a rookie, will help him begin to live up to the promise he showed at LSU.

“It’s a big plus, but at the end of the day it’s going to come down to how I play on the field,” Mingo said. “It’s up to me.”

Mingo and several other players have been moving around within Horton’s scheme, something that is challenging, yet appealing to the former LSU star.

“It Feels great to have a coaching staff that comes in and knows they can get the most out of the team and defense in particular,” Mingo said. “We got coach Horton back and he’s looking to build on what he did his first go-round here.”

His weight has been an ongoing narrative since he was drafted in 2013, but this year Mingo made it a point to put on more weight – nearly 25 pounds – and he’s already seeing positive results because of it early in camp.

“My goal was to get bigger, faster, stronger,” Mingo said. “I definitely feel like that’s helped me these last couple of days.”

Keeping the weight on is the hard part for Mingo, who now he finds himself paying close attention to the scales and his diet.

“Whatever you use, you just gotta put it back in,” Mingo said. “If I’m burning 5,000 calories out here in practice, I just gotta put it back in….I’m at a good weight and I feel great.”

Mingo is competing with Nate Orchard and rookie Joe Schobert for snaps opposite of Paul Kruger.
