BEREA (92.3 The Fan) – Browns head coach Hue Jackson denied that the team is actively trying to trade quarterback Josh McCown to the Dallas Cowboys.
Wednesday league sources told 92.3 The Fan that the Cowboys expressed interest in McCown after after Kellen Moore sustained a broken fibula and Nick Foles signed with the Chiefs.
“It’s rumors,” Jackson said following Thursday’s practice. “There’s nothing to it as far as we’re concerned. I’ve heard about it, obviously I have, but I feel good that he’s here. He’s a Cleveland Brown and I know nothing else about the other part of it.”
Earlier in the day McCown confirmed that he spoke with the front office about the situation because his family in Texas had been “blowing up his phone.”
An open door policy of communication is something that Jackson is trying to establish with the players.
“There’s a certain amount of respect for every player on a football team,” Jackson said. “Obviously he’s played a long time. I would hope that we would do that for every player….I think our organization is just that way. We’re very forthcoming.
“At the end, we’re always going to do what’s best for us, but in respect to the player.”
Jackson expects that if there were to be a trade, he would be involved in the discussion and have input.
“I would hope so,” Jackson said. “But there’s nothing to report or talk about.”
Welcome Back – Right guard John Greco returned to practice Thursday as he completes his recovery from a sprained MCL sustained in week 15 last season.
“I’m feeling good, everything’s progressing well,” Greco said before. “We’re just trying to be really smart about it.”
The veteran, who enters his ninth season and sixth with the Browns, plans to be ready Sept. 11 at Philadelphia. The first step is to get back on the field and he expects that to be very soon.
“Week 1, I’m ready to go,” Greco said. “There’s no question about it. I’m planning on being 100 percent way before then. I’ll be smart over the next few days here and then unleash it next week hopefully and get after it.”
Switching It Up – Baylor rookie Spencer Drango took the majority of first team reps at right tackle Thursday. Veteran Alvin bailey had been getting the bulk of the work there prior to Thursday’s practice.
“I’m going to put the best 5 guys out there and continue to mix and match to see how can we become better,” Jackson said. “Nothing is etched in stone.”
Quote of the Day – “If you are asking me what are we doing as you guys watch practice and we are moving guys around I would use the term kaleidoscope. When you turn it you are going to get a different picture and I want us to have guys that are interchangeable because I don’t know what we are going to be yet” – Defensive coordinator Ray Horton.
Roster Moves – The Browns signed FB Robert Hughes and RB Rajion Neal, waived FB Patrick Skov (injured). DE Dylan Wynn, who was waived/injured, went unclaimed and reverted to the Browns’ injured reserve list.
Injury Report – WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps), WR Andrew Hawkins (hamstring), CB Joe Haden (ankle), TE Seth DeValve (knee), C Cam Erving (elbow), DL Kyle Rose (hamstring), CB Trey Caldwell (hamstring), DB Don Jones (leg), TE Randall Telfer (knee) and FB Malcolm Johnson (concussion) did not practice.
TE E.J. Bibbs and WR Taylor Gabriel (heat), DL Nile Larewnce-Stample (undisclosed) left practice early.
WR Marlon Moore, OL Michael Bowie and DL John Hughes (excused/Personal).
