Local Cleveland Athletes Set To Participate In Olympic Games

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are just getting underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We already know 2016 NBA Champion Kyrie Irving will represent Team USA on the basketball team, but what about some other athletes with Northeast Ohio ties?

BOXING

Charles Conwell Jr.
From: Cleveland Heights, Ohio
School: Cleveland Heights High School
Conwell is just 18 years old and is the two-time U.S. boxing youth national champion. He won the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials champion in the Middleweight division (165 lbs).


RUGBY

Carlin Isles
From: Akron, Ohio
School: Ashland University
Isles once signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad in 2013. According to ESPN, he’s known as the “fastest man in rugby.”

TRACK AND FIELD

Clayton Murphy
Event: 800 meters
From: New Paris, Ohio
School: Akron
Murphy was the gold medalist in the 800-meter run at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Kelsie Ahbe (Team Canada)

Event: Pole vault
From: Akron
School: Indiana
Ahbe was Canada’s top finisher in the women’s pole vault at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto with her fifth place finish.

Shawn Barber (Team Canada)

Event: Pole vault
From: Toronto
School: Akron
Barber won back-to-back NCAA indoor pole vault titles in 2014 and 2015.

Emily Infeld
Event: 10,000 meters
From: University Heights, Ohio
School: Georgetown
Residence: University Heights, Ohio
Infeld won the 3,000 meter at the NCAA indoor championships in 2012.

FENCING

Jason Pryor
From: South Euclid, Ohio
School: Ohio State
Pryor won two bronze and a team gold medal at the Pan American Fencing Championships in 2014 and 2015.

ROWING

Felice Mueller
Event: Pair
From: Cleveland, Ohio
School: Michigan
Mueller won bronze in the 2014 World Championship and gold in the 2015 World Championship.

JUDO

Kayla Harrison
Event: Judo
From: Middletown, Ohio
Harrison won gold in the 2012 Olympics.
