PHILADELPHIA (92.3 The Fan) – Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III sustained a sprained left shoulder in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 29-10 loss to the Eagles.
Griffin revealed the extent of the injury after the game but said that he expects to be fine despite the pain.
“It hurt pretty bad,” Griffin said.
Griffin will be examined and undergo further testing on Monday according to the team.
Griffin got hurt when scrambled for 11 yards on a third-and-15 with 3:45 left to play in the game, but he got clobbered by Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills before he could get out of bounds on the Philadelphia sideline.
“He just surprised me,” Griffin said. “I was trying to get out of bounds. The play happened and you just gotta move on from it. You know, sprained shoulder and just gotta monitor it and see how it goes.”
Plays like that are exactly what the Browns, who have had just 1 quarterback start all 16 regular season games since 1999, want him to avoid.
The Browns’ medical staff looked long and hard at Griffin on the sideline and there appeared to be an animated exchange after the offensive series while backup quarterback Josh McCown grabbed his helmet and started to loosen up.
But Griffin wanted to, and did, finish the game by handing off 3 times to Isaiah Crowell to run out the clock.
“He wanted to be back out there,” head coach Hue Jackson, who also said that the injury wasn’t serious, said. “I don’t know if he argued [with trainers to return] but I thought it was important for him to be back out there with the guys and finish the game the right way. He did.”
Griffin ran 5 times for 37 yards and was sacked 3 times Sunday. He completed 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards and an interception.
“We have to move the ball effectively and be able to get the ball to our playmakers and run the ball effectively as well,” Griffin said. “It’s just about not hurting ourselves with penalties and turnovers.”
Griffin is the fifth straight starter to not throw a TD pass in his Browns debut and the doctors will now determine if he gets to play again next week or will they have to go to McCown.
