INDEPENDENCE (92.3 The Fan) – Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue is thrilled to see Magic Johnson back with the Los Angeles Lakers.
While Lue was sorry to see Mitch Kupchak fired as general manager and Jim Buss step aside as executive vice president of basketball operations, he thinks Magic’s return is a big step for the organization that he won 2 NBA championships with.
“I feel bad for Mitch and Jim that that had to happen but I like seeing Magic back involved with the Lakers,” Lue said. “Him, Shaq, Kobe, they are the face of the Lakers. Just having him involved is big for the franchise. He can recruit guys and get guys come play for him. Whatever he does turns to gold. His smile and personality is infectious and guys want to play for a great.
“Getting Magic involved with the team was a smart move.”
On Tuesday the Lakers named Magic president of basketball operations, just 2 days before the NBA’s trade deadline.
While Lue is trying to lead the Cavs to back-to-back NBA titles this season, he’s never forgotten his roots and he hopes the Lakers return to prominence sooner rather than later.
“I hope so,” Lue said. “That’s where I started and gave me my chance to become an NBA player. Jerry West drafted me and gave me my first chance, winning 2 championships, so I’m always going to be a Laker at heart.
“To see them get back on top would be great. They deserve it. They’re a great organization. They do everything first class. It’s always great to have stars and great teams in L.A. because the city is unbelievable.”
