The Detroit Tigers have traded outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the teams announced Tuesday.
In return, Detroit has received infielders Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King from Arizona.
The 22-year old Lugo is ranked as the second prospect in the Diamondbacks’ system by Baseball America, and the fourth best by MLB.com. He is batting .282 with 21 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 43 RBI and 21 walks in 88 games for Double-A Jacksonville this season.
Alcantara, a shortstop, is ranked 15th in the Arizona system by MLB.com, as the 20-year old is slashing .279/.344/.362 in 86 games at High-A Visalia. King is an 18-year old shortstop who has seen action in 13 games in rookie ball this season.
Martinez was a sure thing to be traded this season, playing at a high level on an expiring contract for a team currently six games out and seven games under .500. The 29-year old is splitting .305/.388/.630 in 57 games this season, with 16 home runs and 39 RBI.
