Oh no! You do not want to stay in Newark, NJ! It is old, ugly, dirty and has a lot of crime. Wait, that’s not fair there is the Ironbound section of Newark which is a tidy solid blue-collar riokwng class residential section of Newark with a lot of Portugese people and Portugese restaurants (yum!) But the rest of Newark, quite frankly, is a ghetto. Not safe at all at night. The office buildings and businesses close up at night. Don’t be lured by the cheaper rates for hotels in Newark rather than New York you’ll have to pay for transportation back and forth. And did you say drive to New York??? Are you CRAZY??? Are you aware that the tolls from New Jersey to New York are near $ 10 and the parking in Manhattan garages are like $ 30 $ 40 for half a day. Find a spot on the street? Trying circling around 10 differant blocks, finding a legal spot finally after 45 minutes and then put in four quarters in the parking meter and you get 40 minutes! Please, please, just stay in Manhattan.

Long Island isn’t part of NYC. The actual hoegrapgic island, includes Queens, Brooklyn, which are part of NYC, but Nassau and Suffolk Counties, which are officially Long Island, aren’t NYC.As far as Jersey City and Newark not being part of NYC, it all comes down to the fact that NYC didn’t take them in. In 1898, the 5 boroughs became the City of New York, and Jersey City and Newark weren’t taken in. (Also, they are in NJ, which may have complicated the matters).Just because the area is built up doesn’t mean it has to be part of a major city. It could be its own city. Suburbs of the city like Yonkers and White Plains are fairly built up, but they are separate cities.Hope this helps.
