Whether it’s the savory, comforting flavors or the delicious pilsners and ales, there’s something about German dining that’s too often underrated. It could be the atmosphere of a German restaurant: welcoming, sometimes rowdy crowds enjoying the company of friends, food and drinks. Whatever it is that makes German food so popular, Cleveland offers it in droves. A number of authentic and recently renovated German restaurants dot the east and west sides of Cleveland, each offering German dining better than the last. These are the best of the best.

The exact location where Der Braumeister Restaurant & Market sits has been home to an authentic German restaurant for more than 80 years. The building is steeped in history, splashed with ale and fragranced with aromatic seasonings. Der Brau (what the locals call it) features a hearty dinner menu perfect for any diner. While grilled burgers and sautés are the main attraction, it’s the authentic German dishes, geshmorter schweinsbraten (roasted pork loin), sauerbraten (marinated roast beef with spaetzle and cabbage) or smoked landjager sausage are the true stars here. Its beer menu offers just as much draw, and this place boasts one of the best bars in Cleveland, with just too many beers to mention.

It makes this place the best combination restaurant for the young crowd looking to satisfy an older European palate. Travel down the sandwiches/wurst and entrée sections to get the authentic German food you’re looking for. Don’t forget to drop in on The Bier Haus for German Fun Food Fest on Saturdays. This is an event worth repeating at a location that begs you stay for more.
