Get away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays by spending the weekend surrounded by the wonders of the Grand River Valley of Lake Erie enjoying the most productive vineyards in Ohio. Take the scenic drive along the Lake Erie coastal way, breathe in the fresh crispy air and enjoy a weekend of relaxation. Here is a weekend trip that is sure to be enjoyable. Explore what the Village of Madison has to offer.

Getting there

Madison is just less than an hour east of downtown Cleveland. Enjoy the scenic route traveling OH-2 to OH-84. From Seltzer Way, merge onto OH-2 toward Euclid/Erie, Pa. Keep left to OH-2 E. via Exit 185 toward Painesville and merge onto North Ridge Road/US20 toward Ashtabula. Take a slight turn right onto Narrows Road, which eventually will turn into Main Street, then back to Narrows Road through town. Miles after the road turns back to Narrows Road, turn left onto South Ridge Road, which is also OH-84 for 4.5 miles until entering the Village of Madison.

Chalet Debonne Vineyards

Madison, OH 44057

Price: $3.50 to $5.95 per person for vineyard or brewery tours

Nestled in 170-acres of plush vines and beautiful scenery, this three-generation business started out as a fruit farm in 1916. The fruit farm was reinvented in 1972 with a wine cellar so it may now produce its own wine. Chalet Debonne Vineyards is the largest vineyard in Ohio and is one of the only vineyards that produces wine from the ground to the wine glass. Lake Erie’s climate provides a perfect combination of warm and cold weather to make Madison a perfect environment to create wonderful and delicious white wine. Even though it also offers red wine, white wines — rieslings and ice wines specifically — are Chalet Debonne’s specialty. It offers 24 options. Chalet Debonne Vineyards once again expanded to include Cellar Rats Brewery with more than six regular beers and four seasonal beers. It brews more than 940 gallons of beer a day. Take a tour of the vineyard and the brewery, and be astounded by the vineyard’s pride and perfection. This winery offers a setting for any mood. Reservations are not needed.

Price: $7-$33

What started out being owned by three friends in 1976 — an estate winery owner, school psychologist and a grocery store owner — it was once Grand River Winery. Sold in 2005 to Madison Wine Cellars, it got a new name, Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant. This winery provides a cozy and warm atmosphere with the crackling sound of the fireplace and a unique atmosphere. It is a perfect place for wedding receptions, parties, company functions or just to hang out on a weekday or weekend night. The plump grapes spread throughout the vines that flow down to the basin of the Grand Valley. A little bit more low key than the Chalet Debonne Vineyards, Grand River Cellars Winery also offers appetizers, grilled sandwiches and dinner items. Though nothing fancy, it is still a wonderful meal. Reservations are not required.
