For the freshest apples anywhere, spend a day apple picking at a local orchard this fall. Ohio offers plenty within a couple of hours of Cleveland. All offer farmers’ markets and gift shops, some even have fall festivals and fun activities for kids. The best five orchards to visit for apple picking this fall promise perfect memories for the whole family.

Located just 25 miles northeast of downtown Cleveland in beautiful Geauga County, Patterson Fruit Farm offers pick-your-own apples every day of the week from late August until October at its Mulberry Road location. On Saturdays and Sundays, enjoy a wagon ride to the orchards or a walk through the orchards on weekdays to pick from several varieties of apples. Family Fun Fest runs at this location from Sept. 15 to Oct. 28 with wagon and hay mazes for the kids. At the Caves Road location, go for a hike or a bike ride in Orchard Hills Park, and then enjoy the market of fresh produce, jams and other goodies, or have lunch at the Orchard Hills Cafe.

Just about an hour southwest of Cleveland, Bauman Orchards in Rittman, Ohio features 20,000 apple trees and 25 apple varieties. It keeps containers on hand for pick-your-own apples, but also enjoy gourds, squash and pumpkins. On Sept. 22 and 29, and Oct. 6, Bauman Orchards will hold a fall festival with hot dogs, cider, wagon rides, a hay maze and a petting zoo. There will also be free live music.

Located about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland in Granger Township Pick N’ Save Orchard has been in operation by the Van Deusen family for more than 70 years and offers 14 varieties of apples it sells per pound. With scenic views, fresh air, horse-drawn carriage rides (by reservation, $10/person), farm tours and hay wagon rides ($2/person), there are plenty of ways to spend the day at Pick N’ Save Orchard. It’s also located close to Hinckley Reservation and Cuyahoga Valley National Park for even more activities for a day trip.

Just outside of Elyria, Oberlin and the Vermilion area in Lorain County, 40 miles west of downtown Cleveland sits Miller’s Apple Hill, Ltd. Miller’s offers apple picking from the middle of September through late October. On Saturdays, it also offers wagon rides to and from the orchard. The last Saturday in September, it hosts its Apple Pickin’ Spree, a festival that has become a tradition for many to start the fall. For the kids, Miller’s Apple Hill also features Pumpkin Land, which includes two hay mazes, scarecrows and farm animals.

Located 60 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland in North Benton, Ohio, Stahl’s Farm Market offers 25 acres of apples. Enjoy McIntosh, Courtland, Jonathan, Red and Golden Delicious, Ida Reds and Melrose. Although it boasts two locations, apple picking is only offered at the North Benton location. Both locations have farm markets with a variety of fruits and vegetables perfect for fall feasting.
