BEREA (92.3 The Fan) – Cleveland Browns tight end Ben Watson is done for the season after the team placed him on injured reserve Friday.
Watson sustained his third concussion of the year last Thursday night at Pittsburgh. He suffered his first concussion of the year during the preseason and left the week six win over Seattle with his second.
“He’s disappointed but it’s the right course of action right now,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “He wishes that he could still be with us but we’ll make this move now and hopefully get him back next year.”
As a result, he saw a specialist Wednesday and there is a real possibility that he will not return this season.
Watson, who has not missed a game, is second on the team with 37 catches and 410 yards this season. He also has two touchdown receptions.
“It’s just kind of strung together on him,” Shurmur said. “I think injuries sometimes come in bunches and it’s unfortunate that he’s sustained three concussions but hopefully we can get through it where he can come back next season.”
The Browns signed Watson to a three-year, $12 million contract in 2010 and he is scheduled to make $2.88 million for the final year of it in 2012 but his football future could be in doubt.
Shurmur says that has not been discussed with Watson.
“Not in our conversations,” Shurmur said. “We were talking more about getting ready for next season.”
To take Watson’s roster spot, fullback Eddie Williams was activated from the practice squad.
Williams will replace rookie Owen Marecic who also sustained his second concussion of the season last Thursday against the Steelers.
“He’s been around, he’s been working, he’s really showed up and done some good things,” Shurmur said. “He’ll play in the game. He’s going to play fullback for us and he catches the ball well. We haven’t been in pads a lot in practice but he can drop his weight and block.
“He’s displayed that he knows what he’s doing.”
The Browns signed Williams, who was a 7th round pick in the 200i9 draft by the Redskins, to the practice squad September 7th. The Seattle Seahawks signed him on September 13 then waived him October 4th before he returned to the Browns.
Marecic will not make the trip to Arizona.
Watson becomes the seventh player placed on IR this season joining Scott Fujita, Emmanuel Stephens, Reggie Hodges, Richmond McGee, Brandon Jackson and Eric Steinbach.
Marcus Benard was placed on the non-football injury list and Billy Yates retired.
