COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State says associate athletic director Bill Jones has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 48.
The university says the alum who was in his 14th year working for the athletic department died Tuesday at the University Medical Center.
Athletic director Gene Smith calls the loss profound, saying Jones’ “genuine enthusiasm, calm demeanor and lifelong love for the Buckeyes made him a valuable part of every project he touched.”
Jones was named associate athletic director for external affairs in 2009. He had previously held other department positions, including assistant athletics director for ticketing.
The Columbus native held a 1986 bachelor’s degree from Ohio State and a 1991 master’s degree from Ohio University.
His father Jim Jones was Ohio State athletic director from 1987 to 1994.
