CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – PEREZ STILL MISSING: It’s not been made official, but the fact that closer Chris Perez was not in the clubhouse today means more than likely he won’t be available for today’s homestand finale vs the Rangers.
Perez was not with the team last night, as his wife Melanie, gave birth to the couple’s second child, a baby girl. Vinnie Pestano worked a four-out save in place of Perez, as the Indians snapped a long losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Rangers.
IMPRESSIVE DEBUT – Indians fans have been wanting to see what they may have in Russ Canzler, and finally on Saturday night Canzler made his Indians debut a memorable one.
Canzler, making just his 4th career appearance at the Major League level, went 2-for-4 with 2 singles which was his 1st career multi-hit game.
He’s back in the lineup for Sunday’s finale, playing LF. For AAA Columbus, he appeared in 47 games at first base, 36 games in left, 11 in right and 8 at third base. Canzler was acquired from Tampa Bay in January.
GOOD START TO THE FINAL MONTH OF 2012: The Indians have averaged just 3.2 runs per game since the All-Star break, but put up four against Texas starter Scott Feldman on Saturday night to take home an eventual 4-3 win. “It’s a new month and it’s nice to start it out with a win,” said manager Manny Acta.
The team is desperate to finish strong after going 5-24 in August. Those 24 losses tied a franchise record for losses in one month. In order to avoid 100 losses, the Indians have to win at least 8 more games in the month of September to avoid a 100 loss season.
The club is at 56-77, and has 31 more games to play till seasons end. If they have another awful month like August, they will be facing a 100 loss season. The team has not lost 100 games since 1991, that season losing 105 with John McNamara starting the season and Mike Hargrove ending it as manager.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Indians will start a road swing on Labor Day, Monday, as they head to Motown to take on the Tigers. Here’s the pitching matchups for the series vs the Tigers.
Monday – Corey Kluber (0-3, 5.16) vs Anibal Sanchez (7-11, 4.24)
Tuesday – Justin Masterson (10-12, 4.91) vs Rich Porcello (9-10, 4.57)
Wednesday – Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14, 5.61) vs Doug Fister (7-8, 3.67)
Rangers – Andrus SS
Indians – Donald 3B
