Ears To You

On the Sunday, December 8, 2013, edition of Cleveland Connection we learn about Ears To You. Host Katherine Boyd sits down with its founder, Ruth Crane.

Ears To You is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to boost the self-esteem and provide hope to cancer patients of all ages through the donation of earrings and hats.  Started in 2008 by Ruth Crane as she was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, the organization aims to support cancer patients by helping them feel good and hopeful during the often tumultuous cancer treatment experience.  When Ruth lost her signature curly red hair, she felt that a part of what made her feel feminine was lost.  Wearing fun, funky earrings along with her wig or a great scarf made her feel so much better while she endured her chemo treatments.  She realized that she wanted to help other women and girls feel good about their appearance during their cancer journey too and thus, Ears To You was born!  It’s amazing what a simple pair of earrings or a new hat can do for your outlook!

Ears To You currently has 28 hospital and cancer support center partners and works to keep these locations stocked with earrings.  Our hat donation program is brand new and we are excited about getting this program off the ground!  Some of the facilities include the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Rainbow Babies & Children, The Gathering Place, Akron General, Akron Children’s, Parma Community General Hospital, Medina Hospital, The James Cancer Institute (OSU- Columbus), Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus), and three locations outside of Ohio.  The complete list is on our website- www.earstoyou.org.  We provide each partner with earrings and they work to distribute the earrings to their patients as they see fit- either at a first chemo treatment, on a tough day, or to celebrate the last treatment!  We also mail earrings to any cancer patient at the request of family and friends.

It often hosts fundraisers to fund the program.  It just honored 9 cancer survivors at a fun luncheon at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, which was hosted by Q104’s Allan Fee.  It will host a family-friendly event this spring to raise funds and awareness of the children’s donation programs which includes earrings for girls and hats for boys.  They have signature earrings and bracelets on our website that are great for holiday gifts and they support their work!  Go to www.earstoyou.org/marketing/ to see the selection of beautiful jewelry created by local designer Leslie Cohen of Kelsey Kincade Designs!
