On the December 15, 2013, edition of Cleveland Connection we talk about the latest treatment for prostate cancer offered at MetroHealth. Host Katherine Boyd talks with Dr. Carvell Nguyen, urologic oncologic surgeon at The MetroHealth System.
MetroHealth offers prostate cancer patients a team of experts and the latest treatment options including:
-Robotic assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
-Prostate IMRT (Intensity-modulated radiation therapy)
-The latest and most advanced hormonal and chemotherapeutic agents for treating prostate cancer
MetroHealth is also now offering MRI-guided prostate biopsy using DynaTRIM, a new advanced technology for diagnosing prostate cancer and the only FDA approved device for MRI-guided prostate biopsy.
Dr. Carvell Nguyen, urologic oncologic surgeon, and Dr. Timothy Kasprzak, director of oncologic and abdominal imaging, are leading this new approach to prostate cancer diagnosis.
When a physician suspects a man has prostate cancer, a traditional ultrasound prostate grid biopsy is performed to take many representative samples from various areas of the prostate. If the ultrasound results are negative, yet a MRI detects a lesion suspicious for prostate cancer, MRI-guided biopsy can now be used to target that specific area.
Performing a biopsy with DynaTRIM reduces the number of tissue samples acquired, and thus reduces the risk of infection, bleeding, pain and recovery time compared to the traditional method.
