MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A new report states that children are consuming too much salt.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90 percent of children in the U.S. aged 6 -18 have too much salt in their diet.
Most of the salt is coming from processed and restaurant foods.
Nearly half of sodium consumed is from 10 common food sources.
According to the CDC, these foods are pizza, bread and rolls, cold cuts, savory snacks, sandwiches, cheese, chicken patties/nuggets/tenders, pasta mixed dishes, Mexican mixed dishes and soups.
The CDC says this is dangerous for children as it puts them at risk for developing high blood pressure or heart disease later in life.
They say parents and schools can help curb sodium intake by offering lower-sodium alternatives and establishing health eating habits.
