NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Can your home actually make you healthier?
New innovations claiming to give you more energy and even help you sleep better are just some of the wellness features found in the new healthy home.
For $50 million, one New York apartment has it all: 8,000 square feet, a private roof deck and an exclusive Village location. But it’s what you don’t see that really takes it to a new level.
“It’s got over 40 amenities built in to it that passively deliver preventative medical intentions,” Paul Scialla said, founder and CEO of the building’s developer, Delos.
In other words, just about every corner of the apartment has elements that can literally improve health.
“I’ve done this to my home about three years ago,” Scialla said. “My energy levels are great, my sleeping patterns are amazing and I haven’t had a common cold for quite some time.”
For example, floors laid over rubber and cork are easy on joints and claim to improve posture. Plus, there is a special treat for your feet in the bathroom.
“These are just rounded stones, it’s really just to trigger the pressure points in your feet,” Scialla said.
Another wellness feature in the bathroom: a vitamin C infused shower which claims it can improve skin, hair and nails by neutralizing chlorine in the water.
In the kitchen, countertops are treated with a surface coating that kills bacteria.
There’s a space for an indoor garden and a water-based steam oven can cook up healthy meals.
And then there’s the lighting.
“Paying attention to what type of light is entering the body in different rooms or settings in the home has a meaningful impact,” Scialla added.
Lighting can be programmed to work with the body’s own sleep and waking rhythms. One of the space’s bathroom’s light emits blue waves that are said to energize.
Wellness amenities are becoming more common.
“This is a passive way to make people healthy,” CEO of Alfa Development Michael Namer said.
Even medical experts agree, home may now be where good health is.
“A well environment but also an environment may improve productivity, may improve health and ultimately is something that I think will be incorporated into more and more homes,” Dr. Richard Firshein said.
Medical experts add that you can make simple wellness changes in your own home. Start in the bedroom with an air purifier, some plants and keep electronics out.
