It’s winter time in Northeast Ohio, and that means local families will be seeking something fun to do until during the holidays. Luckily, the Land will play host to a range of holiday activities that will provide tons seasonal merriment. Whether it’s a stunningly beautiful lights show, revisiting a holiday classic in a whole new way or that all-important visit with the man in the big red coat, there’s something for everyone.  Here are the five best family-friendly holiday events in Cleveland.

Getting the whole family together for a rousing board game is a time-tested bonded activity. Thanks to the good people at the Penitentiary Glen Reservation, visitors can play a life-sized version of the classic Milton Bradley game, Candy Land. As an added bonus, the Reservation’s version of the game is designed to teach kids some important lessons about nature, so this game will be as educational as it is fun. Candy Land has free admission and is open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily until Jan. 1, excluding Christmas, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Traditionally, Santa Claus visits the homes of children all over the world on Christmas Eve. However, this year, kids can return the favor by coming to see Santa, who has temporarily relocated his home to Crocker Park. Popping by Santa’s House is a great activity for kids because it allows children a chance to have a joyful holiday experience. And it’s great for parents because it gives them the chance to commemorate that experience with some very affordable professional photographs. Santa House’s has free admission and is open Monday through Saturday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays, 12 6 p.m.

One of best parts of the holiday season are all the different lights displays that spring up to ward off the darkness that comes with this time of year. While neighborhood light shows are fun, the Gift of Lights takes that tradition to a whole new level. This 1.3-mile drive-thru presentation features more than 30 light up displays and a sensational 100-foot tunnel of lights that is positively breathtaking. The Gift of Lights costs $20 per car is open nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Glow presentation has become a favorite of locals because of the host of holiday delights it offers visitors. Those who enjoy lights displays can take in the thousands of twinkling lights. Fans of holiday music can listen to all the holly jolly carolers. And children of all ages who love trains can take an enchanting ride on the Garden Express. Admission to the Cleveland to the Botanical Garden is $16 for adults and $12 for children is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Federal holidays.

Now, courtesy of the Magical Theatre Company, local families can experience that classic story as a stage play.  Given how deeply the story’s themes resonate with kids, seeing the show with the whole family will likely become a cherished memory for everyone who see it. Tickets for A Charlie Brown Christmas start at $14 and will have multiple showings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Dec. 18.
