According to multiple reports, former Syracuse men’s basketball player Fab Melo died was found dead on Saturday morning at the age of 26.

While the cause of death is not immediately known, Melo reportedly died in his sleep in his homeland of Brazil.

 Melo was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 as a sophomore for the Orange, leading Syracuse to a 34-3 record. However, he was ruled ineligible for the NCAA tournament that season for academic reasons. A investigation later by the NCAA determined that Syracuse attempted keep him eligible to play by changing his grades, and all 34 wins that season were vacated.
“He was a really good kid, and it’s not fair that he will be defined by one thing, a 10-page paper,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told ESPN. “He worked his tail off to become a really good player and was a nice kid.”
