Looking for the perfect babysitter can be a nerve-wracking experience. Melissa Ridler is the owner and placement coordinator at The Nanny Connection and has helped many families in their search for the perfect babysitter. Her degree and work experience have been in child care, non-profit work and providing private in-home care. She loves working with children and families, and helping them find high-quality care for their children. The Nanny Connection was started in Hudson, Ohio over 10 years ago by a nanny, and Ridler branched off creating The Cleveland Nanny Connection over three years ago. In 2013, she acquired the parent agency and has since maintained the original name.

High Quality Sitters Should Come With Verifiable Past Child Care Experience

Families need to be able to get an idea of the quality of care the sitter has provided in current or previous positions. Past experience and references are required for every profession and should be included when searching for the perfect babysitter. For Ridler’s company, The Nanny Connection, it requires at least three past child care references, we personally contact each one of them to solicit and document feedback on the families’ behalf.

The Best Babysitters Are Those That Truly Engage, Play And Interact With The Children

Sitters should be able to keep the children engaged and active while under their care. When interviewing babysitters, asking what ideas for activities he or she has can give you a clue as to how they will interact with your children. Ask your children what activities they did while the babysitter was there to be sure that the sitter isn’t just plopping the kids in front of the television. If this is what is occurring, this is not the perfect babysitter for your child.

Do A Background Check

“Background checks are of the utmost importance,” says Ridler. Families are placing ultimate trust in their sitters to care for their children and respect their home environment, so it is important to verify the childcare provider has a clean record.” Consider having both criminal and driving record background checks performed.

Sitters Should Have Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification

Ridler reminds us that, “emergencies can occur and it is comforting to know that the child care provider is equipped to handle them.”  Be sure that your sitter has certifications in both pediatric first aid and CPR. These can be acquired through local hospitals or a local American Red Cross.

Communication Is Key

Communication should be open for sitters and families. Sitters should discuss how the day went with parents as well as discuss any concerns. “This ensures everyone understands expectations and parents have a sense of their children’s activities and how the relationship has developed between the children and babysitter,” Ridler explains,
