We all need a change of scenery every so often, and parents might need it more than most. Sometimes you need to get the kids out to experience something entirely new. Other times, parents just need some R&R without the kids. Whichever your case, take your pick from the following five destinations – with the kids or without. For each destination, we’ve listed a hotel that will add to the enjoyment of the area.

This charming Chautauqua community of Lakeside is the perfect place to go for de-stressing or relaxing. There are no noisy rides and no giant arcades. Instead you’ll find block after block of Victorian homes, shuffleboard courts, tennis courts and walking paths along Lake Erie. Stop at Sloopy’s for pizza, get fresh donuts from The Patio or enjoy free nightly entertainment at the Hoover Auditorium. Hotel Lakeside and dozens of rental homes offer a place to call home for a night, a weekend or a week-long getaway. Perfect for families or just adults, Lakeside is a little over an hour from downtown Cleveland.

The antithesis of Lakeside is Cedar Point, also known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World. From its world record coasters, to its six dozen rides, to its 10 live entertainment venues, to over three dozen eating venues – you aren’t going to have a problem finding something to do. Oh yes, add in the hotel pool, Soak City Waterpark, a marina and a mile of sandy beach. The 1905 Hotel Breakers offers 600 rooms of hospitality right in the middle of all of the action. Cedar Point is slightly over an hour from downtown Cleveland.

Owned by Cedar Point, but 10 minutes away, Castaway Bay Waterpark is a completely enclosed, 38,000-square-foot water park for those who want to have fun with the kids, but have them stay securely within just four walls. Giant tube slides galore, climbing attractions for all ages and a wave pool offer something for all kids. Moms and dads can lounge on beach chairs and relax while still being close enough to keep an eye on the kids. Multiple dining opportunities will keep the family fed and if you choose to go to Cedar Point one day, you’ll receive discount tickets and early entry privileges. Family-oriented Castaway Bay is one hour from downtown Cleveland.

Close enough to make a day trip to Cedar Point or any of the Lake Erie Islands, but a world away from the noise and the action, is Sawmill Creek Resort. Nestled on 235 acres along the lake, you can play 18 holes on a Tom Fazio-designed championship course, go fly fishing, swim inside or out, play tennis or enjoy the day spa. Four restaurants provide dining options without ever leaving the premises. After a day of fun, it’s the perfect place for families to unwind and be able to enjoy each other’s company in quiet, country lodge surroundings. If you want a weekend for the two of you, to maybe watch an Ohio State Game on Saturday and a Browns game on Sunday, the Buckeye Tiki Bar at Bay Lodging is the fans’ place to be. Just three blocks from downtown Put-In-Bay, you are close enough to the other bars and restaurants, but you are on an otherwise quiet, residential, tree-lined street. Bay Lodging Resort has numerous different room choices, so if you want to invite some friends, the bar can probably accommodate you in a multi-bedroom suite. It also rents golf carts for getting around the island, if you didn’t bring your car with you. Take the Miller Ferry from Catawba Island to get to Put-In-Bay – it’s one hour and 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland.
