Open mic comedy shows are a fun way to spend an evening. Usually held on a weekday night, open mic nights are sadly and slowly becoming harder to find. But there are still a few locations in Northeast Ohio that will open up their stages to this comedic right of passage. Whether you want to perform or just sit in the crowd, here are some of the best places where you can participate in open mic comedy nights in Cleveland, Ohio.

Primetime Live is the name of the open mic night held at Hilarities Fourth Street Theatre. Located in the popular East Fourth District in downtown Cleveland, Hilarities is in the lower level of the Pickwick and Frolic Restaurant and Club. Primetime Live takes place at different times throughout the year, and when new dates are added, they are listed on Pickwick’s website. Currently, there are shows scheduled for July 25, August 29 and September 26, and they all begin at 11 p.m. During Primetime Live, there is usually around ten comedians, and they each perform a short set. Tickets are just $2 and can be purchased online or at the Hilarities box office.

Located in the Smith Centre on State Road, The Funny Stop Comedy Club offers open mic night each week. Every Tuesday is Amateur Night hosted by WNIR’s Tom Collision. The show begins at 8 p.m. All comics who want to perform must contact the club ahead of time. Each “amateur” can take the stage for 5 minutes on Tuesday nights. Tickets for those who want to attend the show are $5 per person.

Venice Cafe is a popular spot among the students and residents of Kent. Venice Cafe holds an open mic night every Wednesday at 9 p.m., with sign ups beginning at 8 p.m. The stage is open to not only aspiring comedians, but really all types of art forms. Musical performances are welcome, as well as poetry readings and anything else one might want to do. The Venice Cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The Grog Shop, located in Cleveland Heights, will be hosting open mic comedy nights beginning in May. Called “Make Em Laugh Monday,” the first one will take place on May 9. After that, there will be five other Make Em Laugh Mondays on May 16, June 13, June 27, July 4 and July 25. Other dates will likely be added later on in the year, so check the Grog Shop website every few weeks.

This German dive bar in the Cleveland Stockyards hosts an open mic comedy show every Thursday at 9 p.m. If you are interested in taking the stage, sign ups begin at the Sachsenheim at 8:30 p.m. If you are interested in watching a show, just pop in and find a seat. While you are waiting for the comics, have a beer or get some food. The Sachsenheim is well known for good beer and delicious, cheap eats.
